WARNING: asshole-ish journal entry ahead.
At first I had no idea what the yellow wristband meant. Then I learned it was to promote cancer awareness. Donate to the cause and you get a Livestrong wristband. Noble cause. This yellow wristband began standing out on business folks, blue collars, my cousin who is a cancer survivor, Average Joe on the Street. Anyone wearing it was making a bold statement.
Then came more colored wristbands, and their unique awareness goals. Donate to the cause of your choice, there's probly a colored wristband for it.
Then came a burger joint commercial. Buy a combo meal, get a green wristband promoting... I don't remember. Probably had to do with getting other people to buy combo meals though.
Then came the gumball machine at the goodwill, where you could get one of 12 different colored wristbands that look just like awareness bands, for 50 cents.
And now, when I see a colored wristband or a rainbow of wristbands on someone's arm, I think nothing of charity, awareness, or the need to donate to a noble cause. I'm actually saddened and a little disgusted, knowing you can get a colored band anywhere, even a gumball machine, and pass it off as support for some cause.
